Spelling program site licences
Planning to enable students to use the program at home as well as at school is an excellent idea. With more and more students getting home computers the teaching possibilities are expanding. Instead of spending more periods in the computer lab, students and classes can just book in for a single period and the teacher can set the rest of the work for homework. Those who do not have home computers may be able to use the school library computers.
This arrangement works particularly well with Personal Best Spelling because, unlike some spelling tutors, the program is fairly unobtrusive (the music can be turned off and so can the voice prompts) and will not disturb other family members at home or fellow students at school.
The program's methodology is simple to learn and user friendly, as well as being very effective for learning, so students engage with the program and get up to speed with it almost immediately. The immediate success they experience is a strong motivator and this feeling of empowerment also extends into other school subjects.
Explanation of licence conditions
These licence conditions spring partly from a specific security feature of the program, namely that a unique Installation Code Number is generated each time the program is installed on a computer. When you notify us of this number, we then email you the program's Registration Code that unlocks the full features of the program.
Where a school is involved, the school may prefer to batch the Installation Code Numbers along with a unique user ID number for each student and teacher home user and send all that information to us. We then email the school the relevant Registration Numbers which are then passed on to the students and teachers by the school. In this way the students' and teachers' names remain confidential; the school remains in control of the process and we deal directly only with the school. However, the way this is arranged is entirely up to the school and if you do not want to be bothered by this extra work and would like us to give the students and teachers their Registration Code directly then we can also do that for you, for an additional fee.
On what computer will the program run?
The other features that should be taken into account are that the program only runs on Windows (95/98/NT4.0/2000/ME/XP/Vista/Windows 7, 32 bit version) and has not been tested on a Mac.
How the licensing arrangements work in practice
Although there is room for variation to suit your school's interests, the way the licensing arrangement usually works in practice is like this:
1. The school purchases a Site Licence. The Site Licence carries a unique ID number that identifies the particular school.
2. The school installs the software on as many computers as permitted by that Licence. Installations can be from Internet download or from a master CD-ROM supplied with the Site Licence. Each installation generates a unique Installation Code Number.
3. The school submits batched Installation Code Numbers for school site installations to us along with the respective computer IDs (a simple code number that identifies the particular computer on which the program is installed) and receives the respective Registration Numbers for each computer ID by email. The school then registers each copy of the program by entering the Registration Number in the program's Registration screen.
4. Teachers employed at the school can install the software on their computer at home or on their private laptop. Teachers can download the software from the Internet or install from a CD-ROM supplied by the school. For every five installations at teachers' homes, the school must purchase one extra copy of the software.
5. The school submits batched Installation Code Numbers for teachers' home installations to us along with a user ID (a simple code number that identifies the particular end user) and receives the respective Registration Numbers by email. Teachers receive their Registration Number and register the program.
6. Students purchase a Student Off-Campus Licence from the school. Students can download the software from the Internet or install from a CD-ROM supplied by the school.
7. The school submits batched Installation Code Numbers for student Off-Campus Licences to us along with a user ID (a simple code number that identifies the particular end user) and receives the Registration Numbers by email. Students receive their Registration Number and then register the program. The school pays $20 plus GST for each off-campus licence and may choose to recover costs from students.
8. The school maintains confidential records of all program Installation Code Numbers, their User ID or Computer ID and the associated Registration Number and date of installation. This information is required for program re-installations and to verify entitlement to free program support.
School site licence and off-campus licence conditions and prices
