Nine easy steps
"I never knew learning to read could be this easy" is what you'll
say after using Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps.
Teaching reading with conventional reading programs is often too
complicated; too difficult and expensive to administer; and slow
to show results. It doesn't have to be this way.
According to the National Inquiry Into the Teaching of Literacy
(2005):
- learning to read is a crucial educational step
- the first school year is critical for learning to read
- reading success underpins overall school success in the later
years
- children who do not learn to read during first grade will end
up far behind their peers by the end of the year and face a difficult
task trying to catch up
- children with reading problems need help early because remediation
after the early grades is mostly ineffective.
Many children are frustrated and confused when they start on the
road to literacy simply because there is no definitive method for
teaching children how to read.
Mostly, it is left up to the ingenuity of individual teachers to
sort out the maze of conflicting theories on how children should
be taught to read. For example, should you use a phonics or a whole
word approach?
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps was developed by an educational
psychologist with over 30 years of experience in helping children
learn to read.
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps is the definitive reading program
that ensures that children will experience immediate success from
the very first step to the last.
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps is underpinned by a fascinating
and proven theory of how children learn to read. The program breaks
up the reading process into nine easy to follow steps.
Every concept and skill the child needs to master reading has been
identified and made explicit so that at every point in the program
the child clearly understands what to do, the reason for doing it
and where things are heading. Importantly, immediate feedback after
each successful step boosts self confidence and provides motivation.
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps, unlike many other reading programs,
is uncluttered with jargon and is very simple to follow and use.
The program comes tailor made for each child and is very user-friendly.
Children like learning this way and the results are therefore quick
to show.
The program reduces the task of learning to read down to nine essential
steps. The first five steps can be mastered by children within 15
minutes, at which point they are already reading their first short
story.
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps can help avoid problems later on
by equipping children with the skills they need to master reading
sooner. Early intervention prevents reading failure.
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps also fully equips the parents,
teachers, tutors and carers who instruct children in reading.
With Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps every child can be successful.
Materials
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps comes packaged as a kit of learning
materials.
The kit contains nine envelopes, one for each step of the program.
Each envelope is labeled with the name of the step and a list of
contents.
Each of the nine envelopes contains a detailed description of the
particular step. This description consists of step-by-step instructions
and also a sample lesson that shows exactly what the parent, teacher,
tutor or carer should say and do to achieve the goal of that particular
step.
The kit contains readers that give the child practice and consolidate
the skills and concepts developed at each step.
Guidance is also given for those rare situations when things may
not exactly go according to plan, so you are not left floundering,
uncertain about what to do next. Such helpful advice can make your
interaction with the child stress free and enjoyable for both of
you, and therefore much more productive.
The instructions in each envelope tell you how to recognise when
the child has reached the goal for that step, and when you can move
along to the next step.
Supplementary readers (Phonic Readers) are also available to further
develop the child's experience and accelerate learning. The Professional
version of the kit comes with these readers already included. These
readers come in either U.S. or U.K./Oz spelling.

Why it works
When all the approaches used by kind, caring and sympathetic teachers
have failed, Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps has been successful
with every child.
This is because this reading program demystifies learning to read.
The program tunes in to how a child learns, making it very learner-friendly;
it is easy for parents and carers to understand and to administer,
so it is also user-friendly; and best of all, it is quick to show
results.
Parents and carers no longer have to be wary of teaching children
to read because they are unsure of exactly what to do.
Learn to Read in Nine Easy Steps is a detailed, step-by-step procedure
for introducing preschoolers and school beginners to literacy.
The learner friendly approach is based on a complete and thorough
understanding of the precise knowledge, insights and state of mind
a child must have in order to experience learning to read as an easy
and pleasant activity.
The learning materials in the kit are personalised with the child's
name. This makes the activities and materials more learner friendly
and makes the learning tasks more personal, relevant and enjoyable.
Instruction manuals explain and demonstrate each of the eight steps
that introduce the child to literacy. The final section, Step 9,
gives the general direction to follow once the eight steps are completed.
Each step gives a full and detailed account of how to present the
learning material, what to say and do, and clear lesson examples.
There is also helpful advice on how to handle possible difficulties
that may arise from time to time.
All this makes for a stress free, pleasurable and productive time
with the child while they learn to read.
The readers that come with the kit (Books A and B; Books 8A and
8B) give the child the necessary practice and help consolidate the
reading skills and concepts developed by the program. These readers
also develop the child's confidence in the ability to master reading,
a state of mind that is crucial if learning to read is to be an easy
and pleasurable activity.
Fourteen supplementary readers (Phonic Readers) are also available.
The Professional version of the kit comes complete with these optional
readers.
