Do you always write "recieve"?

Notice that whenever children and adults misspell words they always misspell them the same wrong way? For example, some people always write "recieve" instead of "receive".

Because they have gone on uncorrected, and inadvertently been practiced, many spelling errors are actually learned, habitual and automatic. We all know that old habits die hard and many spelling errors therefore defy correction by conventional methods.

Although learners pay attention and practice their spelling over and over, the next day they seem to have forgotten what they've learned and the same old spelling errors resurface. It seems we just keep falling back to old ways. Frustrating for teachers as well as students and adult learners, this can go on for weeks, months, even years.

Poor spelling performance is often incorrectly blamed on presumed perceptual or intellectual deficits. Most poor spellers are actually not learning disabled!

The good news is that most poor spellers do not have a learning disability. They have a learned disability. They have many learned, habitual errors that resist correction and inhibit their literacy development.

From this new perspective, then, the problem is not learning the new, it's forgetting (unlearning) the old! That is, old spelling habits die hard because by a process of psychological interference, old learning disables new learning. The old spelling habit interferes with your learning of the new, correct, spelling so you forget what you've learned and fall back to old ways.
